6th - 10th Grade MYP

Students in grades 6-10 will have a double period for Humanities that holistically blends content objectives for both English Language Arts and History/Social Studies.  In Individuals & Societies students develop a conceptual understanding of World Cultures, History, Geography, and Ethnic Studies while developing critical thinking and analytical skills.  In Language & Literature, students develop analytical and performative skills in the 6 domains of language: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Viewing, and Presenting.   Special attention is paid to the students' development in oral language (discussions, presentations, speaking) and to developing a global perspective in both literature and history.  Students are exposed to a wide range of genres such as Poetry, Short Stories, Novels, Non-Fiction, and Current Events while learning to write for authentic purposes in a wide variety of text types.   With inquiry at the root of the JQUS Humanities Program, our aim is to support students’ understanding by providing them with opportunities to independently and collaboratively investigate, take action, and reflect on their learning.  Students meet the IB Middle Years Program outcomes for both areas (Language & Literature; Individual and societies), as well as meeting MA Common Core objectives.
